A Syrian plane has landed in the religious city of Najaf, for the first time in three years, the head of Najaf International Airport said.
Murtadha al-Mawsawi said the airport would be receiving two scheduled flights from Syria per week.
“The airport has received the first flight by Cham Wings Airlines following a three-year interruption due to conditions in Syria,” said Mawsawi.
The Cham Wings Airlines was founded in 2007 but saw its operations receding amid mounting violence in Syria.
A Syrian official said the airlines was scheduling flights to different destinations from Syria and intended to increase flights to Iraq.
However, Fadhil al-Saigh, the airlines deputy manager, said security conditions in Syria were improving.
Mawsawi said Najaf and other Iraqi airports would see more flights from Syria with most Syrian cities currently enjoying a semblance of normalcy.
He said 36 airlines fly regularly to Najaf.
