Iraq has denied reports that the Saudi detainees in its jail were subjected to torture.
“The Saudi detainees are held in reform and rehabilitation centers where they are engaged in various activities among them literacy programs, sports and sewing,” said Health Ministry spokesperson Hayder al-Saadi.
He said the Iraqi government had proposed to the Saudi authorities to visit their detainees in Iraq for a first hand inspection of their conditions.
“There are no torture centers in Iraq that are being run by the ministry,” he said.
There are several Saudi nationals in Iraqi jails imprisoned after being charged with carrying out terror attacks in Iraq. Some of them are sentenced to death.
To refute the Saudi claims of torture, Saadi said the ministry was even prepared to give international press the permission to visit its jails and particularly the locations where the Saudi detainees were held.
